How to Increase Computer Speed With Windows XP

Sometimes even newer or more powerful computers can feel sluggish. In a computer running Windows XP there are a few ways to speed up the computer's performance. While none of these measures will be a perfect fix for everyone, the general rule is that cleaning up files can alleviate some of the strain on a computer's resources and improve the accessing data and performing operations.

Instructions

1→ Run Disc-Check to clean up bad sectors and repair disc errors. Click "Start" > "My Computer." Right click on the drive you wish to repair and choose "Properties." Click the "Tools" tab and choose choose "Check Now" under the error-checking section of the screen. Follow the on-screen prompts to check your disc for errors. This step may take up to an hour.

2→Remove temporary files from your computer to free up disc space. Click "Start" > "My Computer." Right click on your hard drive and choose "Properties." Under the "general" tab click "Disk Cleanup." A window will pop up asking which temporary files you'd wish to remove. Most of them are not essential to your computer's operation. Checking a box next to each of these options and clicking "OK" will remove the files from your computer. Clicking "More Options" will bring up a new window of programs on your hard drive that you don't use often. You will be given the option to uninstall them.

 

3→Defragment your hard drive to help piece together data that has been broken apart during various computer processes. These are not corrupted files per se, but just inefficient ones. Click "Start" > "My Computer." Right click on the hard drive and choose "Properties." Choose the "Tools" tab and click the "Defragment Now" button. Click "Analyze" in the pop up window, which will being the defragmenting process.

 

4→Clean up the unnecessary files on the desktop. The more sparse it is, the less system resources are taken up. You can access programs through the start menu.
